Fntastic, the company behind The Day Before, is officially shutting down due to the financial failure of their game.
Since its initial announcement in 2021, The Day Before has seen its fair share of highs and lows. Initially generating significant interest as the most wish-listed game on Steam, the title’s page listing was taken down from the platform due to copyright concerns. And now, soon after the game’s launch, Fntastic, the company behind The Day Before has made its “shutting down” announcement.
Following The Day Before’s financial collapse, developer and publisher Fntastic has announced via a new tweet that they would be closing down formally. Additionally, Fntastic reports that there are now doubts about the future of their multiplayer horror game Propnight and The Day Before.
In their statement, Fntastic acknowledged the financial setback, expressing regret for being unable to meet expectations. They highlighted the significant efforts poured into The Day Before, their ambitious debut game, but ultimately lacked the resources to continue development or release anticipated patches.
The studio’s announcement post said, “Today, we announce the closure of Fntastic studio. Unfortunately, The Day Before has failed financially, and we lack the funds to continue. All income received is being used to pay off debts to our partners. We invested all our efforts, resources, and man-hours into the development of The Day Before, which was our first huge game.”
They further added, “We really wanted to release new patches to reveal the full potential of the game, but unfortunately, we don’t have the funding to continue the work. We apologize if we didn’t meet your expectations. We did everything within our power, but unfortunately, we miscalculated our capabilities. Creating games is an incredibly challenging endeavor.”
There has been a great deal of criticism directed at The Day Before since it was released. There are technical as well as fiscal causes for this.
In just a few days, The Day Before has accumulated 15,000 reviews, just 18% of which are positive, earning it the “Overwhelmingly Negative” label. This puts it in the bottom 10 list, which is topped by genuinely awful games but also includes a few “protest” major games because of various problems that irritated gamers.
Many gamers felt disappointed to learn that the game is essentially an extraction shooter even though it was frequently marketed as an open-world massively multiplayer online game. Players, understandably, did not like being misled. Coupled with numerous bugs, The Day Before fell short of delivering an effective gaming experience.
