Despite recent speculation circulating about a new Sly Cooper game being developed by Sucker Punch, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier claims that there is no truth to the rumors.
We have heard a lot of rumors about a new Sly Cooper game over the past year. Today, however, rumors started to circulate after Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb posted a video titled “Perfect Dark and Summer Game Mess update,” in which Grubb conjectured that Sucker Punch might be developing a Sly Cooper game, which is why Ghost of Tsushima 2 is taking so long to release.
Grubb mentioned, “That’s speculation, but it’s definitely smoke out there, but maybe where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”
However, Jason Schreier from Bloomberg quickly addressed the issue and refuted the report in a later statement, stating, “No truth to this one, sorry to say. Sucker Punch is a one-project studio. The reason Ghost of Tsushima 2 isn’t out yet is because AAA video games now take 5-7 years to make. (Also, Sucker Punch is smaller than most other AAA game developers).”
The rumors caused mixed reactions among internet users, but given Jason’s standing in the video game business, it’s likely that no Sly Cooper game is currently in development.
Responding to a user, Schreier emphasized, “I can debunk that there’s any fire underneath that smoke.” Another response from him reads, “No, I like Grubb. And he gets plenty of stuff right. I just saw this getting some traction so felt like I should correct the record.”
As for the possibility of Sucker Punch creating another Sly Cooper game in the future, it remains uncertain. Currently, the team seems fully focused on the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima game.
Thieves in Time, published by Sanzaru Games in 2013, was the final mainline Sly Cooper game to be released, however, in 2014 the company clarified that it was not working on a new game in the series, even though the game had a secret ending hinting at a potential sequel.
Furthermore, Sucker Punch said in 2022 that they were concentrating on large-scale games like Ghost of Tsushima and its follow-up and were not currently working on any Sly Cooper or inFAMOUS releases.
Though it’s still too early to discover further details, it’s unfortunate news for those hoping for a new Sly Cooper game anytime soon.
