2K titles are among the most popular in the video game industry, like NBA 2K25 and Borderlands 3. The latest offering from this developer has been codenamed Project Ethos. It is proposed to be a hero-based shooter that will set itself up as a competitor of games like Overwatch 2.
The difference between Project Ethos and other roguelikes or hero-based shooters is that Ethos will allow players to utilize “powerful, semi-randomized” upgrades. This is something that we don’t get to see often in hero-based shooter titles. In terms of the gameplay, this means that players can now personalize it to a greater degree than ever before.
Project Ethos has just been announced on Twitch but already, the internet is abuzz with gossip about it. Let’s take a look at what we know about Project Ethos right now.
Project Ethos release date
The answer here is short but unfortunately, not sweet – we don’t have the faintest clue about the release date of Project Ethos, either from official sources or leaks.
Platforms
Currently, it has been confirmed that Project Ethos will be available on Xbox Series, PS5 and PC via Stream. As for the Nintendo Switch platform, there haven’t been any talks about it yet. So as of now, tough luck for Switch owners.
Coming to Project Ethos’ availability for the Steam Deck, we are in the dark on this one. The Steam store shows the “Unknown” status for this game. However, this is probably because the game is under development. The status can change once Project Ethos is released.
Cross-platform availability
Again, we don’t have any information about whether Project Ethos will have cross-platform compatibility. We predict that it will. This is based on the fact that other famous hero-based shooter games, like Overwatch 2, all allow their players to sync their progress on their console with their PC, or vice versa.
Trailer
In the name of a trailer, 2K has released a 30-second clip of a community playtest. What we can glean from this short video is that the players can use unique skills and upgrades to battle their enemies.
Gameplay
2K’s selling point of Project Ethos is the amount of personalization a player can do to their hero’s ability. The official press release from the developer stated that they aim to let players mold their playing style with “powerful, semi-randomize upgrades” that are highly individual.
Project Ethos is all about freedom and flexibility. An example of this is a sniper that can be transformed into a DPS unit or evolved into a close-range skirmisher as the situation requires. Currently, two game modes have come out.
- Trials: This is the original Project Ethos, its signature mode. Here, players seek out cores to either exchange them for cash or extraction. Later, they can use the cash to unlock progressions and abilities.
- Gauntlet: Gauntlet is about team spirit because this is the competition mode. Here, you will form a group of three and go head-to-head against other trios in a tournament bracket. Coordination in playstyle and upgrades is what will see your team through the fight.
Download size
We only know the download size of the PC version of Project Ethos. According to the game’s official Steam page, you will require 50GB of free space to download it. But of course, this size is not final because the game is still in development.
That is all we currently know about Project Ethos. More information will pour in its release draws near so be sure to keep an eye out.
