Take-Two Sues Illegal GTA Online Marketplace for Selling “Heavily Modified” Player Accounts

Take-Two has filed a lawsuit against PlayerAuctions, accusing them of selling hacked GTA Online accounts and in-game currency, allegedly causing millions in losses.

Take-Two Takes Legal Action Against PlayerAuctions

Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of Grand Theft Auto V (GTA Online), has taken a strong stance against illegal in-game modifications by filing a lawsuit against PlayerAuctions.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. Central District Court of California, alleges that PlayerAuctions enables the sale of hacked GTA Online accounts that provide unfair advantages. According to the legal documents, these accounts contain illegally obtained in-game currency, high-level progress, and other unfair modifications that disrupt the gameplay balance.

Take-Two claims that PlayerAuctions has knowingly facilitated and profited from selling GTA Online content that violates the game’s terms of service.

Take-Two argues that PlayerAuctions’ business model revolves around these illicit transactions, making them fully aware of the legal risks involved. Despite Take-Two’s previous cease-and-desist notices, PlayerAuctions continued to operate, prompting the publisher to take legal action.

Take-Two has stated that these activities have caused significant financial losses, as players who buy currency from illegal sellers bypass in-game purchases, which are the primary revenue source for GTA Online.

Additionally, these modified accounts often lead to bans or security risks, further harming unsuspecting players. Moreover, the introduction of cheats and unfair advantages creates an imbalance in the game, making it frustrating for legitimate players who play fairly.

Take-Two’s Legal Demands

In the lawsuit, Take-Two is asking the court to:

  • Shut down PlayerAuctions’ ability to sell GTA Online accounts and in-game items.
  • Ban PlayerAuctions from offering any services that support GTA Online hacks, cheats, or illegal modifications.
  • Seek financial damages for the losses caused by these unauthorized sales.

This is not the first time Take-Two has gone after illegal modding or hacking services. Over the years, the publisher has aggressively pursued legal action against cheat developers, mod sellers, and online marketplaces that exploit GTA Online for profit.

Now, if Take-Two wins this lawsuit, PlayerAuctions could be forced to remove all GTA Online-related listings from its platform. This could set a strong legal precedent, discouraging other third-party marketplaces from selling unauthorized game content.

Now, while the lawsuit is still in progress, one thing is clear—Take-Two is not backing down, and whether PlayerAuctions will fight back or settle remains to be seen.
