Baldur’s Gate 3 Companions Guide: Locations, Abilities, and Everything to Know

Larian Studios’ highly anticipated RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3, offers players a diverse array of companions to join their adventures.

With ten companions revealed so far, six of whom are Origin characters, players have the option to either create their own character or select one of these unique individuals. Each Baldur’s Gate 3 companion fulfills a specific role within the party and possesses distinct preferences and pet peeves, occasionally extending to their fellow companions.

Let’s get into the details and find out everything we know about the possible Baldur’s Gate 3 companions.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion: Shadowheart

Shadowheart is a High Half-elven Cleric of Shar and it is available as a playable Origin character in Baldur’s Gate 3. Aligned with the neutral-evil goddess of darkness and the night, Shadowheart combines illusion and manipulation magic with her Cleric abilities.

As a ranged support character, she excels at dealing surprisingly high damage and healing from a distance. However, her low AC and Dexterity make her vulnerable in combat.

Despite her squishiness, her versatile skill set comprising damage, support, and healing spells makes her an invaluable asset.

Encountering Shadowheart early on in the game, players can recruit this Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion by finding her at the Abandoned Ruins after crashing on the beach in Chapter 1. By disagreeing with Lae’zel and showing kindness to animals, players can increase Shadowheart’s approval and even pursue a romantic relationship with her.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion: Astarion

Astarion, a handsome High-elven rogue and one of the playable Origin characters in Baldur’s Gate 3, comes with a twist—he is a vampire. This affliction enhances his stealth attacks and offers a few magical options.

Astarion serves as a decent damage dealer, especially when stacking successive sneak attacks. He is very good at lying, convincing people, and picking locks, which makes him very useful for controlling people and opening locked doors. While his starting Charisma stat may not be exceptional, his lockpicking skills make up for it.

Players can encounter Astarion shortly after experiencing Shadowheart, where he seeks aid while hiding from a monster to the West of the beach.

Players should accept his vampirism and allow him to drink enemies’ blood to gain his approval. Indulging him opens up the possibility of reciprocating his flirtatious advances.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion: Gale

Gale, the Human Wizard in Baldur’s Gate 3, may have great hair and powerful spells, but his attempts at flirting with Shadowheart, if she’s in your party, leave much to be desired. Nevertheless, he is a competent magic user with the potential for various builds.

This Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion excels in damaging and controlling spells, allowing him to specialize in either role. His effectiveness relies heavily on his intelligence stat, and he can be valuable for researching magical items. Players can encounter Gale early in the game on the Roadside Cliffs near the beach where they initially land. He appears through a magic portal and willingly joins the party.

Gale’s primary concern is removing the Tadpoles from the characters’ brains. Actions taken towards that goal will gain his approval. However, if players choose to embrace the powers offered by the Tadpole, they won’t be able to pursue a romantic relationship with Gale. Nonetheless, his lackluster flirting skills may not be a significant loss.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion: Wyll

Wyll, a Human Warlock in Baldur’s Gate 3, is an honorable and skilled warrior, even though he works with demons. With his knowledge of eldritch magic and skill with a sword, he makes a great addition to any group. Wyll can take hits because he has a high constitution, and he can deal damage early in the game because he can use the Eldritch Blast cantrip right away. His high base Charisma also makes him good at talking and getting along with people outside of battle.

Players will first encounter this Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion in the Druid’s Grove, where he is training a Tiefling child in a camp that has been damaged by Goblins. Agreeing to help him hunt down the Goblins will solidify him as an ally.

Wyll’s alignment as a do-gooder means that to gain his approval, players should avoid acts of cruelty or mischief. It’s worth noting that he holds some anti-Goblin sentiments, so befriending Goblins may hinder the progression of his romance storyline.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion: Lae’zel

In Baldur’s Gate 3, Lae’zel is a strong Githyanki fighter who is known for her snarky attitude and sharp tongue. Her simple set of skills is based on cutting, which does a lot of damage. This makes her a great choice for new players who want a class with easy-to-understand rules.

Lae’zel’s stat distribution makes her excel as a front-line damage dealer, capable of protecting more vulnerable allies. With the Great Weapon Fighting Style, she gains early access to high-damage two-handed weapons. Her primary non-combat skill is acrobatics, which complements her high base Strength stat.

This Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion is technically the first party member players team up with after a brief encounter in the Prologue. Later, she can be found suspended in a cage by Tieflings on a northern beach of the Roadside Cliffs. Choosing to side with her over the Tieflings allows her to join the party while failing to do so will result in losing her permanently.

Lae’zel is impressed by displays of strength and dominance. She thinks that giving in is a sign of weakness and encourages cruelty. Getting her liked more often makes other party members hate her, which can be problematic. But the benefits can be worth it for those who are willing to put her first.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion: Karlach

The Tiefling Barbarian in Baldur’s Gate 3, set to be released on August 3, 2023, is a vengeance-seeking character on a mission to find friendship and aid the oppressed.

She possesses the ability to Rage, which aligns with her fierce nature. This Origin character can be found in a Chapter 1 quest on The Risen Road.
