Recently Capcom confirmed that a new Resident Evil game is in development, and the Director revealed that “it feels substantial”.
During the recent Capcom Next program, Koshi Nakanishi, a director at Capcom, revealed that a new Resident Evil game is in development, describing it as “substantial.”
This announcement follows months of speculation about a new installment in the iconic survival horror RE franchise. Nakanishi emphasized that this would be an original concept rather than a remake, and he hinted at significant new and upgraded features in both concept and execution.
Resident Evil 7 Director Confirms That New Resident Evil Game Is In Development
Speaking at the end of the Capcom Next: Summer 2024 program, Nakanishi shared his thoughts on the project:
“We’re making a new Resident Evil. It was really difficult to figure out what to do after Resident Evil 7, but I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial. I can’t share any details just yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”
Well, Nakanishi has quite an experience in the industry, especially the Resident Evil series as he has contributed to the franchise since the release of Resident Evil 5 in 2009.
His directorial work on Resident Evil 7 is particularly noteworthy as the game is often regarded as a pivotal point for the series because it renewed focus on horror elements and shifted it to a first-person perspective. Though many fans combined and pointed out that this RE game strayed from the series’ core principles, his approach was well-received by the general audience.
The last original RE game that was released recently was Resident Evil Village, that too in the second quarter of 2021, which is quite a gap. Village expanded the series’ gameplay with a larger, more open environment and Nakanishi’s comments suggest that the upcoming Resident Evil game might offer an even broader and more immersive experience.
While details about the new RE game remain tightly guarded, Nakanishi’s confirmation has fueled anticipation among fans.
Rumors have hinted that an open-world structure built with the RE Engine will be used in the game, similar to that used in Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds. The reports also suggest that the game might be formally announced later this fall, with a potential release date in 2025. However, these are only rumors for now.
Apart from the new game, there are also rumors that Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica are the next in line for remakes. However, for now, the spotlight remains on the new and original Resident Evil project that promises to push the boundaries of the franchise.
