Larian Studios CEO Says Next Game Might Release in 2028 or 2029

Larian Studios, the team behind Baldur’s Gate 3, might not release their next game until around 2028 or 2029. This was hinted at by Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, during the SEA Game Awards 2024. While accepting a Special Recognition Award, Vincke casually mentioned that the studio’s next big game might be ready in five years. But he quickly backtracked, saying it was more of a joke, and reassured everyone that, “We’ll release it when it’s ready.”

When is the next game from Larian Studios coming?

Larian Studios is known for creating big, detailed games that take a lot of time to develop. They don’t want to rush anything, so fans shouldn’t expect a concrete release date anytime soon.

It’s also likely that their next game will be something different from Baldur’s Gate 3, as the studio is already working on several new projects, including at least one brand-new original idea.

While fans are eager to find out what Larian’s next game will be, the studio is staying tight-lipped for now. Vincke didn’t reveal which of their new projects will come out first or what kind of game it will be. He did admit that following up on the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3 is a bit stressful, as there’s a lot of pressure to deliver another big hit.

After wrapping up Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian has said they’re moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons universe, which was the basis for Baldur’s Gate. Although they still have a small team supporting Baldur’s Gate 3, most of their focus is now on what’s coming next.

Global Game Development: Larian’s Target

One of the things that helps Larian create these large, complex games is their worldwide team. The studio has opened offices in multiple locations, including Kuala Lumpur, Barcelona, Dublin, and Quebec. This setup lets them work around the clock. For instance, the team in Malaysia can hand off their work to Europe, and then Europe passes it to North America, which speeds up development without forcing anyone to work crazy hours.

Vincke shared how this global teamwork was especially useful when testing Baldur’s Gate 3. By dividing tasks between different time zones, they were able to test the game in just one week, something that would normally take a month.

The Kuala Lumpur office, in particular, has been a key part of Larian’s success. They were responsible for important parts of Baldur’s Gate 3, like the “Dark Urge” storyline and scripting for the “House of Hope” section. Vincke chose Malaysia because of its large pool of English-speaking talent and its strong background in art and animation. He was proud to see the team there grow from feeling like “outsourcers” to feeling like true game developers.

Now, for the next game, fans will need to be patient. Games as big and detailed as the ones Larian makes take time. Whether the next one comes out in 2028, 2029, or even later, it’s clear that Larian is committed to making sure their games are as polished and enjoyable as possible before they hit the market.
