It was previously reported that Nexon was working on a Game of Thrones MMO game that would take place in the bitter cold and feature well-known sites like Winterfell and The Wall. However, it has now been made clear that Nexon isn’t behind this project; instead, it’s an already-announced mobile game by Netmarble.
The Rumored Game of Thrones MMO Game is Being Developed by Netmarble
First mentioned by The Witcher fan site Redanian Intelligence, it was stated that Nexon, known for titles like The Finals and Kartrider, was working on a new Game of Thrones MMO. However, the news portal later clarified that the game is actually being crafted as a mobile MMORPG by Netmarble.
Redanian Intelligence corrected their report, stating, “Our source has clarified that it’s not NEXON as they previously claimed, but instead NETMARBLE. This is the mobile game that was announced a while back. We apologize for our source’s confusion.” Further clarification came from a Nexon spokesperson who told IGN that the company isn’t involved in any Game of Thrones project, affirming, “(Nexon) does not currently have anything in development based on Game of Thrones.”
Well, the mix-up likely arose from Netmarble’s previously mentioned 2022 Game of Thrones MMORPG, unveiled during the 5th Netmarble Press event, which included a teaser trailer. However, while the info on the developers might have been a little mixed up, the rest of the info seems correct.
Originally, it was disclosed that the game would unfold in the North between the HBO show‘s fourth and fifth seasons (Westeros’s period), where Roose Bolton holds the North, while Jon and Sam remain stationed at The Wall. Here players will get to choose between two characters, with the unselected one still having a role in the story.
Although the characters from the critically acclaimed Game of Thrones show will appear in this game, the original actors who played them in the film will not provide their voices. Nevertheless, players will still get to meet these beloved characters.
Now, although details on the protagonist are scarce, Redanian Intelligence asserts, “it is a new character and they’ll be running around solving problems”. However, there’s no word yet on the MMO’s release date.
This time frame for the MMO suits a Game of Thrones narrative exceptionally well as player-character could fundamentally alter the path of history at this crucial juncture, where the delicate balance of power exists.
Now, although Redanian Intelligence’s reported storyline details hold true, fans will face another lengthy wait for the next Westeros Game of Thrones MMO. Hence, it’s wise to approach this information cautiously, as nothing is officially confirmed yet.
