According to rumors, EA’s next Battlefield game will rival Call of Duty once more with a two-pronged strategy that includes a new battle royale mode.

According to a new report from Insider Gaming, Battlefield is gearing up to introduce its own Battle Royale mode, spearheaded by Byron Beede, formerly the lead for Call of Duty’s live service component. Henderson said that in order to play the mode, you won’t need to buy the original game. And this makes it more likely that this next Battlefield game will be appreciated in the Battle Royale market.

While some might view this as Battlefield playing catch-up to Call of Duty, it’s worth noting that the franchise has been experimenting with similar concepts in the past. Battlefield 2042 featured Hazard Zone and Battlefield V included the Battle Royale Firestorm, both integrated into the full game rather than being free-to-play.

There are reportedly two variants being developed for the battle royale game Battlefield, according to Insider Gaming. There is the actual battle royale and Gauntlet, which pits teams against each other to complete a predetermined set of objectives. As each goal is completed, the Gauntlet team with the lowest score is eliminated. According to the same source, this mode is expected to debut with the next Battlefield game after Battlefield 2042.

EA had thought that Battlefield would surpass Call of Duty, but the last several entries in the series have not performed as well as planned, and Battlefield 2042 in 2021 came alarmingly close to ruining the entire series. There is obviously still interest in the Battlefield model and if the rumors are to be believed, the next major entry is slated for release in October 2025, accompanied by the launch of a free-to-play battle royale mode.

Apart from the new mode, the next Battlefield game is also rumored to be set in the modern era, spanning the years 2025 to 2030. This marks a return to a contemporary setting, a change from the historical settings of recent titles. The game is said to adopt a “back to its roots” approach, emphasizing classic 64-player matches, four character classes, and an overhauled destruction system.

These details, provided by the reliable source on first-person shooters, Tom Henderson, align with EA’s hints about a 2025 launch and a potential rival to Warzone.

However, officially, there is limited information, except that multiple Battlefield projects are in development, all integrated into the new “Battlefield universe.” The CEO of EA, Andrew Wilson, has also hinted at the fact that the next Battlefield game won’t be out until 2025, and according to sources, the game’s current target release date is October, which puts it in line with previous Battlefield releases.
