Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda Movie Trilogy to Begin Filming in New Zealand

Nintendo just made it official—a live-action Legend of Zelda movie is set to hit theaters worldwide on March 26, 2027. Wes Ball, the director behind The Maze Runner series, is taking the helm.

Filming kicks off in New Zealand from November 2025 to April 2026. Rumors are already swirling that this could be just the beginning, with talks of a trilogy in the works. Some major roles might even be locked in for three films over six years.

This is an exciting update, so let’s break it down and see what’s really happening.

Plot Overview of The Legend of Zelda Movie

In the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, Link is a brave young warrior on a mission to protect Hyrule from Ganon, a ruthless warlord after the Triforce—a powerful relic that grants limitless strength.

To stop him, Link sets off on an epic adventure, battling fierce monsters, exploring dangerous dungeons, and solving tricky puzzles.

Along the way, he discovers ancient artifacts that will help him stand against Ganon and save his kingdom before it’s too late.

Production Details

Nintendo is going big with its live-action Legend of Zelda movie, planning a whole trilogy over six years. If you remember, Sony had shared updates about the upcoming Legend Of Zelda movie during its CES 2024 press conference, which happened from January 9 to 12 in Las Vegas.

Now, according to industry insider Daniel Richtman, Nintendo and Sony Pictures are looking to lock in major actors for all three films. This comes after the huge success of Detective Pikachu and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which became one of the top-grossing animated films ever.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary mind behind Nintendo, is producing the film alongside Hollywood veteran Avi Arad, known for his Marvel projects.

Directing the movie is Wes Ball, famous for Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. He wants to make “something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical.” The cameras start rolling in New Zealand from November 2025 to April 2026, and fans can expect to see it hit theaters on March 26, 2027.
