According to analysts, Sony plans to release the PS5 Pro in 2024 in order to capitalize on the excitement surrounding GTA 6 and increase its declining earnings.
Analysts, in a conversation with CNBC, indicate that Sony is likely gearing up to launch a PlayStation 5 Pro by the end of this year. This enhanced version is intended to rekindle interest in the PS5, especially after Sony acknowledged that it anticipates a decline in console sales starting in April 2024, the start of the next fiscal year. The strategic launch timing is also positioned to precede the arrival of GTA 6 in 2025, a release anticipated to significantly bolster console game sales.
Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, told CNBC “There seems to be a broad consensus in the game industry that Sony is indeed preparing a launch of a PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024. And Sony will want to make sure to have a great piece of hardware ready when GTA VI hits in 2025, a launch that will be a shot in the arm for the entire gaming industry.”
There have been extensive leaks on the PS5 Pro’s technical specifications and an alleged September release date, leading to long-running rumors that it will ship this autumn.
Internally known as Project Trinity, the PlayStation 5 Pro is slated for a later release this year, as per sources. However, the fact that Sony hasn’t announced any major franchises for the PlayStation 5 until April 2025, as disclosed in the company’s most recent earnings call, maybe a sign that the launching of the PlayStation 5 Pro has been postponed. Moreover, aligning its release with GTA 6 during the holiday season of 2025, coupled with titles like Death Stranding 2, may influence people to buy a new and updated console.
Well, specifics about the PS5 Pro console’s specifications remain elusive, and, there is no official confirmation regarding the release date of GTA 6 next year. However, considering the impressive trailer, concerns arise about how well current consoles can handle it. If Sony positions the PS5 Pro as the best option to experience the game, it could potentially drive sales and potentially reverse the decline in console sales attributed to the PS5’s aging.
Sony has lowered its ambitious goal of selling 25 million PS5 consoles to 21 million in its updated sales projection for the current fiscal year. And as per Omdia analyst George Jijiashvili, Sony’s only apparent solution to the issue is not to lower the price of the PS5 Slim when the PS5 Pro is announced. But only time will tell how things work out for Sony and the PS Pro in the future.
