Sales data for gaming software between March 25, 2024, and March 31, 2024, has been made public by Famitsu, and despite being launched a day after Dragon’s Dogma 2, Rise of the Ronin outperformed it in Japan in terms of physical sales. Furthermore, in its fifth week of availability, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has sold a total of 4,840 physical copies, ranking 13 on the sales charts.
Rise Of The Ronin Outperforms Dragon’s Dogma 2 Sales In Japan
Even though Dragon’s Dogma 2 initially boasted slightly stronger launch sales than Rise of the Ronin, it’s the PS5 exclusive that’s holding its ground in the most recent Japanese sales charts.
In fact, Ronin has done rather well for itself; in the past week, it has sold an extra 20,000 retail copies, bringing its total to a very respectable 85,000 volumes. Dragon’s Dogma 2, on the other hand, has only sold 9,000 copies, falling from second to fifth place.
The increased sales figures for Rise of the Ronin in Japan could partly be attributed to its connection with Japanese history and culture. Set in the late 19th century Edo era, the game portrays the Boshin War between the Tokugawa Shogunate and various anti-shogunate factions dissatisfied with the influence of the West after Japan was compelled to reopen after the Sakoku period.
Final Fantasy VII Is The Third Best-Selling PS5 Game In Japan
Other than the above two, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth continues to hold its ground in the top ten rankings. Given that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has sold 305,758 copies cumulatively in the four weeks since its release, the 4,840 more copies sold in Japan raise the game’s total sales to 310,596. With sales of over 429,000 copies, Final Fantasy XVI, and Gran Turismo 7, which had sales of about 348,000 copies each, it is now the third best-selling PS5 game in the nation to date.
Though not hitting the sales targets Square Enix might have hoped for, it’s still a commendable achievement for the second installment in the new trilogy. It’s also important to note that digital figures are not included in this calculation, which is quite important as many gamers chose the digital bundle on the PS Store, which contained both Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for free.
In terms of hardware, the Xbox Series sold 1,376 units, the PlayStation 4 family sold 679 units, the PlayStation 5 family sold 20,846 units, and the Switch family sold 57,533 units.
