The long-awaited Skull Island: Rise of Kong has finally hit the gaming market, but initial impressions have left many gamers deeply disappointed. Developed by ‘IguanaBee’ and published by GameMill, this title, the first proper King Kong game since 2005, has majorly received poor reviews and is being compared to the year’s worst-reviewed games.
Skull Island: Rise of Kong is truly disappointing, and might become worst rated game of 2023
In extended gameplay footage of Skull Island: Rise of Kong released just hours ago, several concerning issues become evident. Movement is clunky, with Kong seemingly defying the laws of physics, bouncing off scenery, and struggling with basic ledges. Combat boils down to mindlessly spamming a single button, lacking depth and engagement. Cutscenes are peculiarly devoid of animation, rendering them disconcertingly flat. Environments appear barren and uninspired, leaving players with a sense of emptiness.
One particularly disappointing sequence showcases the player running for an extended period, encountering little substance after a series of strange stuff falls from rocks.
The early reviews don’t look good for Rise of Kong. Some are even saying it might be a strong contender for the title of the worst game of 2023, and that’s saying something, especially considering the reception of LOTR: Gollum.
Twitter user Wayneradiotv drew a damning parallel, asking if players were witnessing a repeat of the disappointment with LOTR: Gollum earlier in the year. While formal reviews for Rise of Kong are yet to surface, the internet is already abuzz with cutscenes, gameplay clips, and complete playthroughs.
On paper, the game’s premise sounds promising. Players get to step into the shoes of the iconic kaiju-gorilla seeking vengeance for his parent’s demise, which could lead to some fun, laid-back gameplay. However, viral clips circulating online suggest a significantly less polished experience, leading some to label the game as a “complete scam.”
Amidst the disappointment, there are flickers of potential entertainment. A specific cutscene featuring Kong encountering an irate sandworm, followed by an amusing shouting match, offers a moment of levity.
While some elements show promise, it remains to be seen if they can salvage what has so far been a less-than-stellar debut for this highly anticipated title.
