Releasing on April 26, 2024, Stellar Blade will have a female lead, stylish and fast-paced action, intimidating and creepy enemies, and much more. However, a recent report claims that a few elements won’t be available until after launch. Stellar Blade will not have New Game Plus available when the game launches, rather, it will be included as a post-launch update along with free DLC cosmetic skins.

Shift Up, the development studio behind Stellar Blade has talked about its plans for DLC and the free planned cosmetics. The game’s director Kim Hyung Tae and the CEO of Shift Up, stated in an interview with the South Korean website Ruliweb (via Push Square) that the game will get a New Game Plus mode after it is released. Additionally, the game’s protagonist Eve will have access to an additional 30 outfits through free upgrades, including costume bundles in the base game.

Kim Hyung Tae emphasized that Stellar Blade will not feature any microtransactions at launch. He stated, “We would like to make it clear here that Stellar Blade does not require any additional expenses that gamers are not aware of other than the cost of purchasing the package.”

However, there is a condition to this statement: if Shift Up collaborates with other developers for “collaboration costumes,” these may be sold for a fee. Collaborations between Stellar Blade and other IPs “may be sold for a fee,” according to Kim Hyung Tae, but everything else will be included in post-launch updates with no microtransactions visible.

It’s commendable that Shift Up is committed to providing new content for free rather than introducing additional costs on top of the base game. This year, microtransactions and DLC have already given rise to a number of controversies, particularly in relation to the largest titles released. Recent incidents, such as Capcom’s inclusion of seemingly unnecessary microtransactions in Dragons’ Dogma 2 and the locking of New Game Plus mode behind a special edition for Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, have sparked outrage among players.

In light of these controversies, Stellar Blade’s approach to post-launch updates is a breath of fresh air. While the extent of the updates remains to be seen, it’s reassuring to know that they will likely be available to players at no extra cost.
