Top 5 JRPGs in 2025

Tales of Graces f Remastered – January 17, 2025

Bandai Namco’s original Tales of Graces released way back in 2009 was a great hit on Wii, and they are bringing back a remastered edition after more than 15 years. This edition will host a slew of new and exciting features.

Ephinea, the world where the game is set, will be better than ever, the graphics will be overhauled, cutscenes can be skipped, and auto-save will be an added option. Players can also turn off enemies if they want to solely savour exploring the fields and dungeons.

The grade store will be unlocked from the beginning and will receive a facelift to ensure that both old fans and new players find something to their liking. This title is set to release on January 17, 2025.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii – February 21, 2025

A spin-off of the popular Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (2024), this title is set six months after the episodes of its predecessor and delivers the audience to the islands of Hawaii. Goro Majima, the main character, is suffering from amnesia and has decided to turn to the unlikely profession of piracy.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii features four regions, among them are Honolulu and Madlantis. Majima, with his dual fighting styles of Mad Dog and Sea Dog, turns combat back to the old ways: shooting with pistols and cutting with cutlasses. This title is set to release on February 21, 2025.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition – March 20, 2025

Xenoblade Chronicles X will be released by Monolith Soft for the first time on Nintendo Switch and that too in a graphically overhauled definitive edition. Moreover, new storylines will also feature in this title as an annexe to the already huge sci-fi narrative.

With customizable avatars, players will navigate five diverse continents of the alien world Mira. Coming to their aid are Skells, which are giant mechs that players pilot to fight and journey. The title is set to release on March 20, 2025.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter – Fall of 2025

Falcom and GungHo Online Entertainment join forces once again to reproduce a beloved title, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. Only this time, it will be named Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter. With 3D graphics and upgraded gameplay mechanics, players will be able to re-experience the stellar journey of Estelle and Joshua.

These two are apprentice Bracers who travel the Liberl Kingdom, altruistically resolving disputes but also uncovering secrets. This remake will now feature two battle modes. The first is the Field Action, which introduces real-time combat for the first time in this video game. The second is Command Battle, which is the classic, turn-based system. The title will be released in the Fall of 2025.

Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD 2D Remake – 2025

After Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake received an overwhelmingly positive response, selling more than 800,000 copies in the first week since its launch in Japan alone, the developer has decided to follow the same route with Dragon Quest 1 & 2.

Square Enix will revamped both these titles in the same now popular art style. The HD-2D visuals will resemble those in the Quest 3 Remake, with enhanced lighting, atmospheric effects, and rebuilt character sprites. These remakes are chronologically linked to the Erdrick Trilogy and so they will revolve around the hero’s legacy. The release dates of these two titles are yet to be announced but should happen in 2025.

Those were our picks for the best five upcoming JRPGs in 2025. This list is not meant to be definitive, and who knows, a last-minute announcement in the industry would upend this order by throwing some titles out and bringing some new ones in.
