CD Projekt Red, the creators of Cyberpunk 2077, have reportedly begun pre-production on a sequel to the game. This information was leaked online following some job openings from the company.
After its release in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 faced severe backlash due to poor gameplay experience. However, with numerous updates and three years of post-launch support, the game has significantly improved. The Netflix anime series “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” and the 2023 expansion, Phantom Liberty, further boosted the game’s popularity.
The sequel, codenamed Orion, was announced by CD Projekt RED in October 2022. The company decided to announce the sequel before the project went into pre-production, believing it best to work on a game when its existence is already known to the public.
The job listings posted by CD Projekt revealed some minor details about Orion. The sequel will feature emotional and action-packed cutscenes and movie sequences, return of crafting mechanics from Cyberpunk 2077, focus on open-world events, potential for multiple maps, and seamless blending of dialogue scenes and gameplay.
CD Projekt Red has hired some veteran developers for Project Orion. Dan Hernberg, former head of production at Amazon Games and lead product manager at Blizzard Entertainment, has joined as the executive producer
Ryan Barnard, a game director at Ubisoft Massive and IO Interactive, has joined as the design director. Alan Villani, who has previously worked on Mortal Kombat games, will be the engineering director. Anna Megill and Alexander Freed will be the lead writer and assistant writer, respectively.
With the impressive resumes of the developers and the lessons learned from Cyberpunk 2077, fans have high expectations for the sequel. The details revealed so far suggest that Orion will offer an immersive and action-packed gaming experience. Stay tuned for more updates!
