Microsoft Acknowledges Russian Cybercriminals Accessed Its Source Code and Internal Systems

Microsoft confirmed that it was hacked by a state-sponsored Russian group called Midnight Blizzard. The group gained access to various internal systems and company source code

Midnight Blizzard used information initially exfiltrated from Microsoft’s corporate email systems to gain or attempt to gain unauthorized access. This included access to some of the company’s source code repositories and internal systems.

Microsoft stated that it hasn’t found any evidence of the hackers gaining access to any “Microsoft-hosted customer-facing systems”. However, the group did get access to some customer details through emails accessed.

Midnight Blizzard is attempting to use secrets of different types it has found. Some of these secrets were shared between customers and Microsoft in email.

Since the attack was first announced back in January, Microsoft has been improving its “security investments” to ensure information is protected.

Microsoft’s active investigations of Midnight Blizzard activities are ongoing, and findings of the investigations will continue to evolve.
