The upcoming Switch successor, Nintendo Switch 2 will probably be released in the latter half of 2024, as the Nintendo President says that the Switch will be the company’s primary priority for the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2024, and it will continue to get support in the following fiscal year, which ends in March 2025.
Although the Nintendo Switch 2 has been on our radar for a while now, details on its release is still a mystery. Reports hint at a potential launch sometime in 2024, and a recent rumor has narrowed this down to the latter half of the year.
Nintendo’s President, Shuntaro Furukawa, mentioned in an interview with Nikkei that their focus for the current financial year ending in March 2024 remains on the Switch. However, in the subsequent financial year ending in March 2025, they will continue to provide support for the console. This shift from “focus” to “support” strongly suggests the launch of a new console in Nintendo’s 2024/25 fiscal year, aligning with previous speculations.
Adding to this, YouTuber Doctre81 has alos highligted a recent job listing suggesting Nintendo Switch 2’s release in late 2024. The listing, for a Retail Marketing & Strategy intern, mentions an exceptional work experience opportunity between June and August, involving mentoring, networking, and exposure to industry leaders. This suggests a major marketing campaign, possibly tied to a significant launch—making the debut of a new console a likely candidate.
Although a June 2024 launch is improbable, it’s conceivable that Nintendo will intensify marketing efforts during these three months, preparing for a late August or early September release.
Furthermore, previously YouTuber Nate The Hate also revealed details about the Nintendo Switch 2’s reveal schedule. According to him, the announcement will occur after Nintendo’s current Fiscal Year, concluding on March 31, 2024. He also shared insights on the console’s launch and specifications. As per his sources, the Nintendo Switch 2 is slated for release in late 2024.
Nate claimed to have heard from multiple developers about the existence of devkits. He predicts that the console will debut alongside a brand-new 3D Mario game and will feature an 8-inch LCD screen along with a substantial amount of internal flash memory, potentially 512 GB. Production for the Nintendo Switch 2 is anticipated to kick off in the First Quarter of 2024, falling between April and June.
Nate also mentioned a closed-door showcase of the Switch 2 console at Gamescom, demonstrating The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at 4K resolution and 60 fps, aided by Nvidia’s AI-driven image reconstruction tech, DLSS.
Well, apart from the release date, leaks have alos hinted at the potential features of Nintendo Swicth 2.
Thanks to Microsoft’s legal tussles over its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, as well as reports of demos presented by Nintendo at Gamescom, we’re gaining insights into the Switch 2’s hardware capabilities. Internal emails from the FTC v. Microsoft case indicated Activision’s discussions with Nintendo in December 2022 regarding the console, with the impression that performance would rival “Gen8 platforms” — referring to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Comparing it to “Gen8” might actually downplay the Switch 2’s potential. Reports from Eurogamer and VGC on the Gamescom demos suggest that Nintendo showcased Switch 2 hardware aiming for specs akin to current-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft, complete with ray tracing in The Matrix Awakens’ Unreal Engine 5 tech demo.
This doesn’t mean the Switch 2 will surpass the power of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Instead, Nintendo is likely employing clever techniques to optimize performance on a less potent graphics processor.
Additionally, there are rumors that Monster Hunter 6 will debut on the Nintendo Switch 2 and Far Cry 7 will be a day-one launch title for the Switch 2 console. However, all these claims are yet to be verified by Nintendo.
