New update on Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake shared by Disney

The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake exists in a peculiar state of uncertainty. While some sources claim BioWare’s RPG Remake is complete and abandoned, never to see daylight, others suggest it’s encountering issues in development but remains alive.

Now, Sean Shoptaw, head of gaming at Disney, who was reluctant to go into too much detail on the awaited remake, in an interview with Axios, gave us hope that it might truly happen.

Shoptaw said, “Not a lot I can say on that point for some hopefully obvious reasons, but KOTOR is obviously an incredibly popular game, one that we are incredibly proud of and think that there’s still a lot of demand for. I’ll leave it there.”

The executive basically means that the company is still considering making a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. In an attempt to meet clear demand, the owner of Star Wars, and consequently KOTOR, has shown a growing interest in licensing the famous IP to well-known game companies.

This statement comes after the claims made last month that the project had been abandoned. The host of the Game Mess Mornings podcast, Jeff Grubb, declared that the game was essentially “dead” because Saber Interactive and other studios were “not working on it right now.”

Contradicting Grubb, a reputable insider and reporter for Bloomberg, Jason Schreier, stated on X/Twitter that Saber Interactive is still developing the Star Wars KOTOR Remake, however, it’s unclear if it will ever get a release or what kind of game it will be.

The KOTOR remake was unveiled in 2021 as a PlayStation exclusive, sparking excitement among fans of the original RPG. Since then, though, not much has been spoken, except for allegations of continued development challenges. The KOTOR remake was apparently put on indefinite hold last year due to dissatisfaction with the development. However, there has been no word from Saber’s parent company, Embracer Group, regarding the remake of Knights of the Old Republic.

Also, the company’s CEO, Lars Wingefors, stated last month that he doesn’t want to discuss the game more because he doesn’t want a ton of articles to come out about it. That makes sense, but it would be helpful to get confirmation on if it’s still in the works.

Overall, the puzzling and confusing journey of the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake keeps on going. The game isn’t definitively active or dead – its creators acknowledge the demand, but a release timeline remains unclear. All we can do at the moment is wait and hope for the best with this one.
