The studio recently announced the rebranding, revealing that Project L has transformed into 2XKO, a 2v2 fighting game set in the League of Legends universe. Riot Games is planning a 2025 release window for 2XKO, with availability planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms.

To discuss the plans for the game, Riot Games also released a video titled “Year in Preview.” Executive producer Tom Cannon expressed the growth of the development team and emphasized their commitment to crafting an ever-evolving fighting game, acknowledging the excitement surrounding the project and the challenges ahead.

“Our dev team has grown significantly since we last talked, and things are really ramping up. Overall, we’re building an always-evolving fighting game for the FGC (fighting game community), and there’s so much to be excited for. But there’s also a lot we still have to figure out, and so that’s where we’re going to need your help,” said Cannon.

Cannon mentioned the expansion of the development team and the need for player feedback, indicating that a playable demo would be showcased at various locations worldwide throughout the year. The 2XKO team aims to strengthen its connection with the fighting game community through playtests and demo opportunities in 2024. The first chance for players to experience the game will be at EVO Japan in April, with more playtests planned for the remainder of the year. Interested players can sign up for at-home playtests on the official website, which is expected to commence later in the year.

Although the name revelation is recent, much is already known about Riot’s League of Legends fighting game, as it was officially introduced as Project L in 2019. The game is developed in collaboration with Radiant Entertainment, a company Riot Games acquired three years ago.

Riot’s renowned MOBA game and 2XKO are situated in the same universe, and a number of well-known champions have already been confirmed to arrive in this game such as Ekko, Ahri, Darius, and Yasuo, the latter being announced as a playable character in August of the previous year.

Riot Games has confirmed that 2XKO will adopt a free-to-play model, intending to be considerate of players’ time and wallets. Adding to that, Cannon outlined the developmental focus, stating, “2023 was us in Project L heads-down mode, with a really valuable check-in at Evo. 2024 will be about getting you more involved with events, updates and yes, maybe even some at home playtesting later this year. And in 2025, we’re aiming to fully launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.”
