Fans waiting to play Cities Skylines 2 on consoles will have to wait even longer because the release has been delayed indefinitely. The game first came out on PC in October 2023 but has faced many issues for the console version, and the issues don’t seem to end.

Cities Skylines 2 Console Release Has Been Delayed Indefinitely

Cities Skylines 2 was supposed to come out on consoles at the same time as the PC version in October 2023. However, due to performance issues, it was first delayed to spring 2024, then to October 2024. Now, it’s been delayed again with no new release date.

The developers, Colossal Order, and the publisher, Paradox Interactive, said the console version isn’t ready because of ongoing performance issues. They want to make sure the game is stable and runs well before releasing it on consoles and they’re working on fixing these problems but can’t say when it will be ready.

The developers are making slow progress and are currently awaiting a new Release Candidate (RC) in August, which will undergo a thorough evaluation. This review will help them decide if the game can start the process of getting certified for consoles or if more work is needed.

The developers in a forum said:

Unfortunately, we have not yet met the stability and performance targets we set for the console release. Without a Release Candidate (RC), we are now unable to meet an October release window.
While we are making slow but steady progress, there are still unresolved issues impacting the game in ways that harm the player experience we want to deliver. We expect to receive a new RC, which will undergo a thorough review in August. This evaluation will determine whether we can begin the submission process and provide a solid release date, or if further issues need to be addressed.
We understand this is disappointing, and it’s not what we had hoped for either. However, we are committed to keeping you informed throughout this development process, even if the updates aren’t always what we’d like.
Thank you for your understanding and support.

Well, many players are disappointed by this delay, however, this is not the first time for the game. The PC version of Cities Skylines 2 also had performance problems when it launched, which upset many players and critics. The game creators got some flak for how things went down and they even gave refunds for a DLC (extra content) that got a lot of complaints.

Currently, the developers are trying to fix these issues and improve the game. However, at the time of this writing, more players are still playing the original Cities Skylines on Steam than the new version.

Well, as for the console release, the indefinite delay means that Cities Skylines 2 will launch on consoles more than a year after its initial PC release.

This extended timeline was not part of the original plan for either Colossal Order or Paradox Interactive. However, both game companies are still working hard as they want to make the PC version better and figure out how to make the console version awesome too.
