New PlayStation Studio in LA Developing Co-op Multiplayer Game Using Unreal Engine 5

Sony has launched a brand-new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, and it’s all about co-op multiplayer action. They’re using Unreal Engine 5 to bring something fresh to the table, and the team is packed with industry pros.

Jason Blundell, the guy behind some of Call of Duty’s biggest hits, is leading the charge. This move fits right into PlayStation’s big plan to focus more on live-service games, even after shutting down a few projects.

Let’s find out what this development all about.

PlayStation Studio Project Overview

PlayStation’s new studio in Los Angeles is working on a brand-new game with a big focus on co-op multiplayer.

Job listings show they’re looking for people who specialize in game systems and online play, which means teamwork and connectivity will be a huge part of the experience.

The team is using Unreal Engine 5 to build the game, taking advantage of its powerful tools to make gameplay smooth and exciting.

Job Listings and Insights

A job listing for a Game Systems Designer highlights the need for expertise in co-op multiplayer design, indicating that teamwork will play a central role in the gameplay experience.

Another listing for a Senior Gameplay Engineer specifies work on core systems such as weapons, abilities, player movement, networking, and AI, reinforcing the game’s online multiplayer nature.

The game seems to be shaping up as a fast-paced action co-op title. The focus on weapons, unique abilities, and movement could mean a hero-based game, maybe something in the hero-shooter genre.

These details strongly suggest the studio is creating a new intellectual property with a primary focus on cooperative gameplay mechanics.

Leadership and Development Team

PlayStation’s brand-new AAA studio in Los Angeles is being led by Jason Blundell, the guy behind some of the best Call of Duty Zombies experiences.

After leaving Treyarch in 2020, he started Deviation Games in 2021, but things didn’t work out, and the studio shut down in 2024.

Now, Blundell is back in action with PlayStation, leading a fresh team of experienced developers. The goal is to create an exciting new game with a unique and efficient development process.

This team isn’t just about making another game—it’s about pushing boundaries and doing things differently.

Context Within PlayStation’s Live-Service Strategy

PlayStation has been putting a lot of effort into live-service games, hoping to mix up its lineup and take advantage of the growing trend of always-online, money-making games.

But things haven’t gone as planned. “Concord” flopped hard, getting shut down just two weeks after launch. That failure made PlayStation rethink its strategy, leading to the cancellation of some big projects, like a live-service “God of War” from Bluepoint Games and a multiplayer game from Bend Studio.

Even with these setbacks, PlayStation isn’t giving up. A new co-op multiplayer game is in the works at its Los Angeles studio, showing that the company is being more careful but still pushing forward with live-service ideas.
