Following the success of the Demon’s Souls remake in 2020, Bluepoint has been surprisingly quiet about their subsequent project, sparking a lot of speculation and anticipation among fans. However, Bluepoint Games, a PlayStation first-party studio renowned for its fantastic remasters and remakes has finally confirmed that it is diligently working on its highly anticipated original title.

The announcement of the development of an original game came after PlayStation’s acquisition of Bluepoint in 2021. Bluepoint’s President, Marco Thrush, had stated at the time, “Our next project, we’re working on original content right now. We can’t talk about what that is, but that’s the next step in the evolution for us.” This declaration hinted at a brand new IP, despite the fact that a few enthusiasts speculated it could be a fresh take on an existing franchise.

Now, Peter Dalton, Bluepoint’s Head of Technology, recently reinforced this commitment on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Nothing has changed since our statement that we are working on an original title. Everything takes time. We are committed to sharpening our skills!”

Dalton’s message is clear: good things take time, and the team is dedicated to perfecting their craft.

In May, during PlayStation’s corporate strategy meeting, Bluepoint was listed under “Partner Studios” alongside other support teams. This categorization caused concerns that their original project could have been sidelined in favor of support roles. However, Dalton’s current confirmation has alleviated these fears, assuring fans that the studio’s ambitious project is very much alive.

While concrete information about the game stays under wraps, a presentation from an Insomniac Games files breach in December 2023 offered a tantalizing hint. The leaked concept art suggested an Aztec setting, featuring characters wielding spears against a dramatic backdrop. Although this concept art may not represent the final product, it sparked considerable excitement and speculation about the game’s potential direction.

Well, Bluepoint’s track record with high-caliber remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls sets a promising precedent. These projects showcased the studio’s ability to handle intricate game mechanics and stunning visuals, raising expectations for their original title.

Moreover, Bluepoint’s President, Marco Thrush, previously highlighted the studio’s extensive experience in original game development. “Our team is a very highly experienced team, the average experience among most people is about 15 years, and all of them come from original development,” Thrush explained. This experience, mixed with the help of Sony, positions Bluepoint to launch a standout original title.

But thinking about the timeline of the development of a AAA game, fans will need to exercise patience. Bluepoint’s original project, which in all likelihood began development around their acquisition in 2021, remains in its middle tiers. The earliest possible release is probably in 2026, however, a more sensible expectation might be some time between 2027 and 2032. This timeline shows that the game may debut on the next generation of PlayStation consoles.

As anticipation builds, fans remain hopeful that Bluepoint will leverage its technical knowledge and creative imagination, and will deliver an original game that meets or exceeds our expectations.
