Persona 6 will reportedly have the same high school setting as seen in the past games in the series, claims a reliable leaker in the Persona community.
It’s been nearly eight years since the release of Persona 5 in 2016. Following that, Persona 5 Royal, an enhanced version with additional content, came out in 2019. Since then, Persona fans have eagerly anticipated the arrival of Persona 6. As per the reports thus far, Persona 6 is rumored to be coming out in 2025, however, there is currently no word on when it will be revealed. And now a new report from a trustworthy leaker suggests Persona 6 will take place in a high school.
The association of Persona games with a high school backdrop has been a consistent element since the franchise’s inception in 1996. However, as the fan base has matured, there has been a growing desire for the series to explore settings beyond the confines of high school. Many fans now advocate for Persona 6 to embrace a more mature narrative. However, renowned Atlus leaker Midori claims that won’t happen.
On February 26, during the fan discussion concerning whether Persona 6 would be better off without the high school practice, the insider stated on Twitter that the forthcoming Persona 6 game is “not getting out of high school.”
Well, Atlus’s decision to maintain the high school setting can be attributed to several factors. One key factor is the studio’s past attempt to shift away from high school with Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, which resulted in the lowest sales in the franchise’s history. Another consideration is the mainstream appeal of Persona. Given that a larger portion of the fanbase experiences high school compared to university, the high school setting inherently resonates with a broader audience. And hence, maintaining this relatability could contribute to the ongoing success and popularity of the upcoming Persona 6 game.
Additionally, cultural nuances play a role, as educational years hold distinct significance in Japanese and Western cultures. While Western societies often associate freedom and personal growth with college, Japanese culture places these experiences within the high school context. This cultural difference sheds light on why Atlus continues to emphasize high school as a pivotal period in its games, aligning with the societal perspectives in Japan.
Aside from the setting, Midori, using the online handle MbKKssTBhz5, previously stated in November 2023 that Persona 6 is slated for release in 2025, but, the exact timing of the game’s revelation is still pending a decision from Atlus. However, there’s a possibility of a delay to 2026, coinciding with Persona 6’s release with Persona’s 30th anniversary.
As is customary with leaks, only official announcements from Atlus can provide concrete confirmation regarding the details and release schedule of Persona 6. Until then, fans will have to eagerly await official updates to get a clearer picture of the highly anticipated game.
