The gaming world is buzzing with talk that new PlayStation and Xbox consoles could hit the shelves in 2027. This idea started spreading after news broke about Supermassive Games canceling Blade Runner: Time to Live.
The game was meant for today’s systems and something called “Gen 10,” which people believe points to the next-gen consoles.
Nothing is official yet, but gamers and fans are already getting excited. If these rumors turn out to be true, the gaming scene could change in a big way.
Let’s take a closer look at what this might mean for the future of gaming.
The Canceled Blade Runner Game That Spilled the Beans
Supermassive Games, the team behind Until Dawn and The Quarry, had something really exciting in the works. They were secretly making a game called Blade Runner: Time to Live. It was supposed to be a third-person action-adventure, where you’d play as So-Lange, a Nexus-6 replicant who had lived past his expiration date.
The story was set in 2065, in a place called New Zurich. You’d sneak around, fight enemies, and try to complete a big mission—take down a rogue replicant named Rev.
The campaign was going to be about 10–12 hours long, full of action and tough choices. It started early planning in September 2024 and was supposed to launch in 2027 on PC and new consoles.
Sadly, the project got shut down quietly in early 2025, mostly because of problems with the Blade Runner rights owners, Alcon Entertainment.
What the Canceled Game Tells Us About the Future
So, the game was supposed to come out in September 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and even the next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. These future consoles were called “Gen 10” in the plan, which hints that Sony and Microsoft might be launching their new systems around that time.
Since Supermassive is owned by Nordisk Film, and Nordisk works closely with PlayStation in the Nordic countries, the team may have known early about the new consoles.
Even though the game got canceled in early 2025, it gave us a peek at when the next big consoles could arrive.
Now, Supermassive Games thinks new consoles might come out in 2027, and there’s a good reason why. The studio is owned by Nordisk Film, a big entertainment company in Denmark.
Nordisk Film works closely with Sony because they handle PlayStation stuff in the Nordic and Baltic countries. Since they’ve had a strong partnership with Sony for a long time, it’s likely they get early updates about PlayStation plans.
So, it makes sense that Supermassive Games might know a bit more than most when it comes to future console launches.
What the Rest of the Gaming World Is Saying?
Sony’s next console, the PlayStation 6 (PS6), is already deep in development. It will use a custom chip made by AMD, and testing might start as soon as late 2025. People say the PS6 will have a super fast Zen 6 CPU and a fresh UDNA graphics system. This means games will look and run way better than they do on the PS5.
Microsoft isn’t far behind. As we know it’s working on a new Xbox, also expected to come out in 2027. The next-gen consoles will let gamers play older games with no problems. Microsoft also wants to connect Windows and Xbox better, so it feels like one big system.
Both companies usually launch new consoles every seven years, and it looks like they’re sticking to that plan with some pretty cool upgrades.
