Ubisoft is making a movie based on their game called “Watch Dogs.” It’s been in the works for almost ten years, and now they’ve started filming it. The company revealed the much-anticipated adaption of the high-tech, open-world hacker game series last night on social media. And here is all that we know about it.

Watch Dogs Movie Has Officially Began Filming

Though the details about the film’s plot remain under wraps, and for years, it seemed there was little progress in bringing this high-tech, hacking-focused franchise to the big screen, earlier this year, things started moving.

After nearly a decade since its first announcement, Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs movie has officially begun filming. The news came via Ubisoft’s social media, where they posted a set photo with the caption “Lights_Camera_Action.exe.”

It’s still unclear whether the Watch Dogs movie will follow an original story or be based on any of the three main games in the series. These three games include a gritty Chicago-based original, starring rough hacker Aiden Pearce; the brighter San Francisco-set sequel, starring the young Marcus Holloway; and the grim Watch Dogs: Legion, set in grim post-Brexit London, which launched in 2020.

Well, the game is all about hacking and cool technology. There’s a group called DedSec that fights against a big-data system called CtOS. Think of it like hackers trying to take down a powerful system. Now, it is expected that the movie will be similar—it’ll happen in a made-up future version of real cities and the hackers will try to expose and break down the CtOS system. However, nothing is known for sure as of now.

Team Working on the Watch Dogs Adaptation

According to Deadline, the project is being directed by Mathieu Turi, who is currently adapting “A Plague Tale” for television. Based on the same report, the screenplay is written by Christie LeBlanc, known for Netflix’s 2021 French sci-fi thriller “Oxygen.”

Sophie Wilde, known for her role in “Talk to Me,” was reported to be in talks to star in the film, and now this has been confirmed, along with the news that the Hunger Games prequel star Tom Blyth, will also be attached to the project.

Furthermore, Ubisoft’s head of content Margaret Boykin, the president of motion pictures Natalie Lehmann, and New Regency CEO Yariv Milchan are producing the movie. And for those who don’t know, the New Regency Productions, the ones handling the production duties are known for movies like “Pretty Woman,” “Fight Club,” and “Gone Girl”.

While there is no official release date yet, the fact that the Watch Dogs movie is finally filming is a significant step forward. With a talented director, a promising cast, and the backing of renowned producers, there’s a lot to be excited about.

Now, while, the start of filming has generated excitement and speculation about the potential for a new Watch Dogs game, there has been no confirmation of a new game being greenlit.

Despite the success of the Watch Dogs games, with the first two selling 20 million units combined, no new games in the franchise are currently in development. Hence, for now, fans of the series can look forward to the movie adaptation only.
