Unconfirmed Reports Suggest New Layoffs at PlayStation

There are rumors going around that PlayStation might be planning more layoffs from different teams. Posts on social media and gaming forums say that some employees have already been let go.

Let’s take a closer look at the rumors surrounding these developments.

Current Rumors of New Layoffs at PlayStation

There are rumors going around on social media that Sony’s PlayStation division might be having another round of layoffs.

The company hasn’t confirmed this yet, but one former PlayStation employee shared their story online, saying that most of their team had been laid off.

The dev said they were sad to leave behind projects like the PS5, PlayStation Portal, PSVR2, and the PS App. In their post, he wrote:

“Most of my team was just laid off from PlayStation. It was a dream to get to work with Sony on the platform I’d grown up playing since the PS1 and contribute to the PS5, Portal, PSVR2, PS App, and future consoles. If you know anyone who needs an engineer experienced in native console UI, feel free to reach out.”

It looks like some teams working on PlayStation’s hardware, software, and next-gen development may have been hit by layoffs. But since Sony hasn’t said anything official yet, we don’t know exactly how many people were let go or which departments were affected.

Background on Previous Layoffs at Sony

Recently, Sony’s PlayStation division has undergone multiple rounds of layoffs. These actions reflect both broader challenges within the industry and internal restructuring efforts within the company. For example:

2023 Layoffs:

In 2023, PlayStation had to let go of a lot of people, including some folks at Naughty Dog, the team behind “The Last of Us.”

At least 25 developers lost their jobs, mostly from the quality assurance team. This happened because their multiplayer project wasn’t going as planned.

PlayStation’s Visual Arts support studio also saw some senior designers leave during the layoffs.

Early 2024 Major Layoffs:

In February 2024, Sony Interactive Entertainment made some big changes, letting go of about 900 people, which was 8% of their entire workforce.

They also decided to shut down London Studio, the team behind games like “SingStar” and “Blood & Truth.”

This move was part of their plan to keep up with the changes in the gaming world and tackle some challenges they’ve been facing.

Late 2024 Layoffs:

In October 2024, Sony decided to shut down Firewalk Studios and cancel their game, Concord, because it didn’t do well in sales or keep players interested.

Concord was launched in August 2024 but was taken down just a month later in September since it didn’t meet expectations.

Sony also closed Neon Koi, a mobile game studio. These changes led to around 210 people losing their jobs.

Well, because of all the uncertainty, people are starting to wonder about PlayStation’s future plans, especially with all the recent job cuts in the gaming world. Fans and employees are just waiting for Sony to clear things up and give a response.
