After an exciting week of anticipation and speculation on social media, the Detroit Lions made an official announcement on Wednesday regarding their new alternate helmets, i.e. Lions New Blue Helmet.
Departing from their traditional silver helmets, the Lions have embraced their iconic Honolulu Blue color for this special edition. The design of the Lions New Blue Helmet holds significant meaning as it commemorates the team’s 90th anniversary. Paying homage to their history, the helmet showcases the walking lion logo that was used by the team from 1946 to 1969.

Lions New Blue Helmet: excitement over “Sharp” and “Sweet” Surprise
A teaser video for Lions New Blue Helmet was released on Wednesday morning featuring some team members getting a sneak peek. Lions coach Dan Campbell expressed his approval, stating, “I like it. That’s going to be pretty sharp.”
Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was impressed, exclaiming, “Oooh, this is nice,” while defensive end Aidan Hutchinson added, “This thing is sweet.” The video hinted at something exciting and well-received by the team.
In a clever marketing move, the Detroit Lions have piqued fans’ curiosity with a series of cryptic clues. It all began with a photo shared on Monday, showcasing a blue Mustang adorned with a license plate reading “ALT HMT” and a bumper sticker indicating June 21.
The intrigue continued on Tuesday when the same Mustang made another appearance, this time reversing into the frame, accompanied by the caption “tomorrow.”
In a follow-up tweet, the Lions clarified that the primary blue shade featured in the helmet has never been utilized before in the NFL. Fans can look forward to witnessing the team dons these striking helmets on October 30th when they sport their all-gray alternate uniforms against the Raiders.
Additionally, the helmets will be worn again in the final game of the regular season against the Vikings. This fresh addition to the Lions’ attire is sure to generate excitement among fans and create a visual spectacle on the field.

No Uniform Changes for Lions in 2023 Season
According to a report from February, the team’s uniforms for 2023 will remain unchanged, but they will introduce a new helmet design.
In 2022, 13 NFL teams utilized alternate helmets, but the Lions did not participate.
Presently, alternate helmets can only be worn with corresponding alternate uniforms. For the Lions, this would mean pairing the alternate helmet with their gray jerseys and pants.
Potential New Jerseys for the Detroit Lions: Anticipated Changes in 2024
The Detroit Lions last introduced new uniforms, including home, away, Color Rush, and throwback jerseys, in 2017. According to President Rod Wood, the Lions are in discussions with Nike about releasing new jerseys, but it seems that the unveiling won’t take place this year.
NFL teams are permitted to change their jerseys every five years, and alternate helmets must feature a logo from the team’s history.
Wood mentioned that the Lions are aiming to introduce the new uniforms in 2024, suggesting that fans may have to wait a bit longer before seeing any changes to the Lions’ jerseys.
