Warner Bros. has revealed that Hogwarts Legacy is the best-selling new game of the year 2023.
Warner Bros. recently revealed that Hogwarts Legacy, one of the most popular AAA releases of 2023, has risen to become the top-selling new game of 2023.
The news was shared on Twitter and its main focus was to celebrate the Hogwarts Legacy’s availability across all platforms, yet, amidst the celebrations, fans noticed an interesting detail in the image, highlighting the game as the “#1 selling new release of 2023.”

This achievement sparked a wave of celebrations among fans, who joined Warner Bros. in commemorating the milestone on Twitter. However, some users expressed surprise that despite its popularity, Hogwarts Legacy didn’t receive any nominations at The Game Awards.
Normally, awards focus on quality rather than sales, and with an 85 Metacritic score—higher than some nominated games, especially in the Best RPG category—the omission seemed puzzling.
While Hogwarts Legacy received positive reviews for its rich lore, stunning visuals, deep characters, and engaging combat, it faced backlash due to controversial remarks made by J.K. Rowling about the transgender community in the past. Despite this, other titles nominated in the same category, such as Lies of P and Starfield, had lower sales and review scores. And hence, its absence from nominations ignited debates online, with many speculating whether the controversy surrounding the game had influenced its snub more than its actual quality.
In Hogwarts Legacy players learn how to make potions, cast spells, and become proficient in a variety of magical skills. The game takes place more than a century before Harry and his pals enroll in the witchcraft and wizardry school.
Although there’s been no confirmation about future DLC or expansions, reports suggest that the developers are already working on a sequel, Hogwarts Legacy 2 to capitalize on the game’s popularity. Additionally, the successful launch of the Nintendo Switch port on November 14, 2023, considering the platform’s inherent limitations, marks another milestone for the game.
