It’s hardly surprising that Takuro Mizobe, CEO of Pocketpair, Palworld developer, finds the game and its enormous earnings a little overwhelming given that it has sold a record 15 million copies on Steam and has an extra 10 million users on Xbox. However, despite Palworld’s success, Mizobe isn’t aiming to join the triple-A market just yet.
Palworld CEO Wishes To Focus on Indie Games and Confirms Massive Profits
Takuro Mizobe, the CEO of Pocketpair has stated in a Bloomberg interview that the company is unable to manage the massive revenue the Palworld game has brought in and that they would like to keep the studio small and concentrate on making indie games rather than branching out into high-end, triple-A projects.
Mizobe revealed that Palworld was developed for less than ¥1 billion ($6.7 million) and has generated ¥10 billion (approximately $67.2 million) in profit. He admits that the sum is “too big for a studio with our size to handle,” and further adds that he has no plans to grow the business or give away shares. Instead, he wants Pocketpair to stay small, stating, “We are and will remain a small studio,” having 55 employees as of right now.
Also, while maintaining the stance that he has not yet begun buyout negotiations with Microsoft, Mizobe stated he is open to collaboration or acquisition. Mizobe says, “I want to make multiple small games. Big-budget triple-A games are not for us.”
However, even when Mizobe opens up the studio to collaborations and/or acquisition negotiations, Pocketpair’s core values of being independent and prioritizing entertaining and engaging multiplayer experiences remain. “Games are most fun when playing with friends […] a game without a multiplayer mode just doesn’t feel right in the era we live today,” adds Mizobe.
Well, Pocketpair’s persistence is understandable given Palworld’s financial success. Additionally, it may now afford to undertake projects in the future without being constrained by outside expectations. However, despite its significant success, Palworld has been part of many controversies.
For now, while Pocketpair’s plans include keeping the studio small, there are discussions underway to bring Palworld to additional platforms, indicating that PlayStation 5 and Nintendo console releases are possible down the road.
Overall, whether you’ve been a Palworld fan from the beginning or not, this is an excellent opportunity to play the popular game as it is still among the most played games on Steam and the Xbox Series S or X, with thousands of players all around the world.
