The skateboard video game industry has been dominated more or less in the past years by the Tony Hawk video game franchise. But in recent years, after reaching a peak of popularity, especially among teenagers, this series has witnessed a slow decline in its sales and fame.

And as if to take its place, another skateboard video game franchise has slowly come into the picture, first sharing and then dominating the genre. And this franchise is Skate.

Skate is the new name in the video game industry. It has been developed and published by various subsidiaries of Electronic Arts, including EA Mobile (meaning that it is available on mobile phones) and EA Black Box. There have been three sequels in the Skate game series up till now: Skate, Skate 2, and Skate 3. And now the fourth and latest sequel, Skate 4 is set to release.

And of course, many have tried to discover something about the game before it goes live and they have succeeded in leaking a Skate 4 gameplay video. And the surprising thing is, this pre-alpha gameplay footage of Skate 4 has drawn out not just positive and excited responses, but also, and in a significant number, negative and bad reactions.

The Skate 4 gameplay video has been on social media for a while now.

Skate 4 gameplay footage leak

It has been a long time since the release of Skate 3, the last sequel, way back in 2010. And as can be expected, fans around the world have been raving about a successor for a long time. And the said successor has been confirmed not long ago.

But recently, there hasn’t been a lot of information coming our way about the Skate 4 gameplay. That’s why this gameplay leak has been so widely received in the gaming community.

Electronic Arts decided to do something different with this franchise: they have moved away from the usual and boring button-focussed gameplay and have brought in the “flick it” system.

This means that to pull off stunts and stuff in the Skate 4 game, you will no longer be pressing buttons. Instead, you’ll be using the thumbsticks and moving them in certain directions to do certain tricks.

Here is all that we know about it. Let’s dive right in!

Are Skate fans going to abandon Skate 4?

This leak is recent at the time of writing. The information about the Skate 4 pre-alpha was leaked by the Twitter user Jeff Grubb, who is an analyst and a trusted and reliable industry insider, in a tweet.

After revealing the Skate 4 gameplay footage, Jeff said that the video was “in line with what I’ve heard about where the game is at from multiple people.” After that, he discussed his take on the game, which was that “they’re trying to get the feel right, which is probably the most important aspect of a Skate game.” After that, he included a link, but it seems to no longer be working.

The Skate 4 gameplay footage is 33 seconds long. Here we see what we can only assume to be the game in the very early stages of development. The video shows us a player who is barreling down a path and pulling off the usual vintage kickflips.

After that, he goes board-free and does some sick front flips. We also experience the bail effect when the skater doesn’t land properly in Skate 4.

For Grubb “this is all exciting.” He says that EA is working hard to make the game realize its full potential. One commenter said, “This is a great start. That front flip off the board and landing on it is sick af. Can’t wait. Hope the city is more.”

But another famous insider, Tom Henderson, was not as happy about this leaked Skate 4 gameplay footage as the others. He said that it is “sad” to watch a Skate 4 leak in such a manner, that is, in an early stage of development. But he still went on to share the leak in the tweet. He mentioned that the map is currently called “Fun Town.”

Also, some of Henderson’s followers were not that receptive to the leak either. One person said, “It’s sad to see but at the same time we must be cut-throat against EA, sad for the devs but the work looks like it speaks for itself. Reminds me of skate 3 I hope for the best”.

And that is the way things are at the moment. The Skate 4 game might not be the most pleasant to look at right now, but we must not dismiss it just because of that.
