Elden Ring Dark Moon Greatsword is one of the weapons that every player wishes to get but the steps to get their hand on one isn’t that easy.
The one sword that’s near impossible to acquire in Elden Ring, the role-playing action video game from FromSoftware, is the Dark Moon Greatsword. The history of this sword dates way back before Elden Ring. In fact, it has been part of the Souls, the action role-playing game series, in some form or the other.
To identify the Elden Ring Dark Moon Greatsword, just match the designs and names (for example Moonlight Greatsword) or a title that resembles the original name.
It can easily be said that Elden Ring Dark Moon Greatsword is a characteristic feature of FromSoftware’s games and had to show pop up now in Elden Ring after also featuring in titles Bloodborne, Dark Souls 1, 2, 3, and Demon’s Souls. The connection between all these games and just being a fun Easter egg is a real possibility.
However, whatever that turns out to be, let’s check out how to unlock the Elden Ring Dark Moon Greatsword, first.
Elden Ring Dark Moon Greatsword can’t be just picked up
The unfortunate truth is that this sword can’t be picked up in a dusty nook or a cleverly-concealed crevice in the game. What has to be done is a series of long and complicated (and sometimes boring!) side quests that give you an alternative ending.
First, you need to meet the character Ranni, then side with her and complete her quests to unlock the Elden Ring Dark Moon Greatsword after having become her champion. There is a way to choose a different ending so that you don’t get Ranni’s ending but still get the sword.
So to find the sword, we have to first find Ranni.
Locating Ranni in Elden Ring
The first encounter with Ranni in Elden Ring is at the Church of Elleh at the beginning of the game. She is dressed in blue and hatted. She gives you the Spirt Calling Bell and calls herself Renna.
Through some quests, you’ll have to meet Ranni again at the top of Ranni’s Rise. For this, you have to clear Caria Manor in Liurnia of the Lakes, defeat Royal Knight Loretta, and unlock Three Sisters, the area behind it. Also, you need to beat Rennala to get Ranni to appear.
To get to this point in the quest, however, you’ll have had to defeat Radahn. On the off chance that Ranni still doesn’t show herself, try resetting the hostility at the Church of Vows through a Celestial Dew.
This could happen because you got into a conflict with Ranni’s underlings as you progressed through the storyline. Once Ranni appears, however, she’ll offer you a chance to join her side.
One last option could be speaking to the Wizard Rogier at the Round Table Hold and following his quest for some time. After a while, he’ll himself give you a chance to act as Ranni’s spy. The twist is that Ranni will see through your deception and still invite you to join her. You’ll have the chance to remain loyal to her, however.
Elden Ring Ranni’s Quest
You won’t be able to leave Ranni’s side until you have spoken to her lieutenants, the obnoxious Seluvis, friendly giant blacksmith Lji, and Half Wolf Blaidd. You could’ve already met Lji and Blaidd on your quests before.
As Radahn is dead, you would be able to enter the Eternal City of Nokonand find the Fingerslayer Blade and give it back to Ranni. She will then give you the Carian Inverted Statue and send you to the Carian Study Hall and tell you to put the statue on the altar, which will unlock the Divine Tower of Liurnia, which in turn will allow you to find the Cursemark of Death on Ranni’s original body.
This unlocks the tower Renna Rise where you use the portal to be transported to the Ainsel River Main and talk to Miniature Ranni. She’ll ask you to find the Baleful Shadow. For this, you’ll have to go to Nokstella, Eternal City, and defeat it to release Ranni’s soul. That’ll earn you the Discarded Palace key, which will lead to the Elden Ring Dark Moon ring in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library.
The ring allows you to travel to the Lake of Rot and go towards the Grand Cloister area. You’ll enter a coffin here to get transported to Astel, Naturalborn of the Void.
Finding the Elden Ring Dark Moon Greatsword
Defeat Astel and go through the Moonlight Alter into the Cathedral of Manus Celes. Within, you’ll find Ranni’s body and two Fingers avatar. You will have the choice of using the Dark Moon Ring on Ranni’s body to totally free her.
Here, Ranni will appear before you and present the Elden Ring Dark Moon Greatsword to you. Remember that you have to complete the quest first.
Well, that’s pretty much all that you need to know for getting hold of the Elden Ring Dark Moon Greatsword. It’s a lot of hassle. But believe us, it is worth it.
